Antique Bakery is a life action Korean movie based on a shoujo manga created by Fumi Yoshinaga. Shoujo manga can be compared to let's say, YA Chick Lit because this kind of manga is directed to the female demographic on their teens.
Antique Bakery shows us the life of four young men who work at a cake shop. All of them ended at this sugary place for diferent reasons. Jin Hyeok opens a cake shop and hires a pastry master. This patissier creates masterful desserts, he seems perfect for the job... Want could go wrong? He makes men crazy about him, also he is linked to Jin Hyeok past. They keep working and soon the place needs more people, and a boxer and Jin Hyeok's bodyguard enter to the scene. The cake shop becomes part of their lives and it becomes the place for their new beginnings. Jin Hyeok hates cakes but he has a powerful reason to maintain this place running. With this shop his life, his mental health and emotions will improve; the place will make him whole again.
I love this movie, I have watched it many times and always feel the same level of interest and novelty. The story has lots of comedy but also has serious moments. My favorite scene of the movie is a moment during Jin Hyeok's childhood when he takes a metaphorical key and closes his chest as a way of entrap his emotions inside a drawer.
The characters are interesting and are completely different from each other. They are interesting and peculiar on their ways. The setting where they develop is a character on itself. The cake shop is full of life, looks warm, lovely and like a good place to have some great dessert and good conversation.
During the movie they show delicious desserts. Opera Cake is one of them. Doesn't it look sinful?! Also, I found a recipe for it at http://allrecipes.com/recipe/opera/ If you want to see some delicious plates you can visit Sifu Renka at Flicker.
Rating: 5 out of 5 stars, this is one of my favorite Comedy/Drama movies
